Jessica Simpson and John Mayer have gotten together … again.
The off-and-on couple reunited in New York City on Sunday night, sources close to the situation tell PEOPLE.
“They saw each other last night. I have no idea what will happen with them tomorrow,” says one source. “I don’t think they’re sure. All I know is that they like each other and saw each other. Everyone’s waiting to see what’s going to happen.”
A source close to Simpson chalks up the couple’s recent break to the usual romantic ups and downs.
“They’re in a normal relationship,” says the source. “This happens with relationships sometimes.”
Adds the source: “They went on a date last night. They had a great time. They had dinner.”
On Friday, multiple people familiar with the couple confirmed that Mayer and Simpson had split up – but predicted that it would be a temporary break.
One friend said last week that the pair had “been emailing and talking to each other” since Simpson went to the Cannes Film Festival in France last Wednesday, adding: “I’m sure they’ll get back together.”

Less than two years ago Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey were celebrating their third wedding anniversary in Italy, but the no-longer-newlywed Simpson recently went back to the country – this time to Rome with her singer squeeze John Mayer.
“She’s really happy,” says longtime Simpson friend and New York City colorist Rita Hazan, who touched up the singer’s brunette locks before her departure.
While in Rome, Mayer and Simpson booked a top floor suite at the Hotel de Russie – the same hotel where some of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s guests stayed during the couple’s November nuptials.
On March 8, the lovebirds lunched at Dal Bolognese restaurant. “He was smiling very much and she was giggling a lot,” says a source at the eatery. “They held hands for much of the time and had eyes only for themselves.”
The couple, who left the restaurant hand-in-hand, attracted some attention but didn’t seemed phased, says the source. “When they walked out there were three or four paparazzi waiting for them,” says the source. “They didn’t seem to mind having their pictures taken.”
Next stop, Via Condotti, Rome’s most exclusive shopping street, where Mayer, 29, and Simpson, 26, strolled among the crowd. They stopped to shop at Fendi, Gucci, Valentino and even La Perla’s luxury underwear shop.
Between all the shopping and eating out, Mayer, found time to post panoramic photo montages of his visit on his blog.
“Sometimes you try to shoot subjects way too expansive for any camera lens,” wrote Mayer, who took a series of eight photos to try to capture the grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum. “Some people call this trip a ‘Roman Holiday.’ But I call it a very expensive way to get new desktop pictures for my Mac.”
The couple left Rome Tuesday, according to a source who says, “They’re back in L.A. now. They had a fantastic trip.”

Jessica Simpson and John Mayer continued to share quality time together Friday night at his concert at the Bank United Center at the University of Miami, where Simpson was dancing to Mayer’s entire set and 20-minute encore, sources tell PEOPLE.
“She was rocking out the whole time,” says one concertgoer. “She only seemed to know the words to his older songs though, because she sang along to ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ and his older hits.”
With a camera in hand, Simpson – who took in the show from the sound and lighting area alongside stylist Ken Paves, Billy Joel and his wife, Katie Lee Joel – snapped photos of herself and Paves, Mayer and the crowd.
“She was dancing like she was a real fan, and a lot of the crowd had their eyes on her the whole time,” says the observer.
Simpson, 26, and Mayer, 29, longtime friends who’ve been linked off and on since the summer, spent a lot of time as a couple in Miami last week, working out and dining together last Monday, then spending Tuesday heading toward his concert in Jacksonville.
This Monday, after an Orlando gig on Saturday, Mayer is due to perform in Pensacola.

Three weeks after getting cozy in New York over New Year’s Eve, Jessica Simpson and John Mayer made another cute-couple appearance, this time in Miami.
On Monday, the pair worked out together at their hotel’s Sports Club/LA gym, taking a yoga class and then lifting weights a deux, sources said.
That evening, they arrived hand-in-hand at The Shore Club’s Nobu restaurant, where they sat and talked for more than two hours over sushi and bottled water, she in a revealing black dress, he in a black sweatshirt and jeans.
Simpson, 26, and Mayer, 29, longtime friends who’ve been linked off and on since the summer, chatted easily, and at a few points she leaned forward and he reached across the table to hold both her hands.
“They looked really cute together,” says one witness at Nobu. “They were talking and laughing the whole time. She was constantly fixing herself to make sure she looked her best for him.”
When the check came, she reached for her bag and he reached for his wallet. She, however, pulled out a lipstick while he grabbed the bill. After the meal, she took a trip to the ladies room, and when she came out, wrapped her arms around the much-taller Mayer and stood on her tiptoes for a kiss on the nose.
How long with the couple be in the Sunshine State? Mayer, at least, should be sticking around: He’s performing in Jacksonville on Thursday, Miami on Friday, Orlando on Saturday and Pensacola on the following Monday night. [People]
