In a move that further dispels rumors of marital strife, Tom Cruise has plunked down $35 million for a Beverly Hills home for himself, Katie Holmes and baby Suri, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The star, 44, had been renting a home in Beverly Hills for the past several years (he and Holmes, 28, married last November), but that lease runs out next year, according to the paper.
The new address, which reportedly was not even on the market when Cruise made his offer, is described as a ” traditional-style residence.”
Originally built as a 10,000-sq.-ft. structure in 1937, the house was expanded four years ago and currently contains seven bedroom and nine bathrooms, say those familiar with the property.
The Cruises will have their privacy: the house sits on 1.3 acres behind gates and a lengthy driveway, and sports a tennis court and a pool.
As for the Cruises’ current residence, according to this week’s issue of PEOPLE, the compound also serves as a gathering place for Cruise’s children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman: Isabella, 14, and Connor, 12. (Suri is 1.) The actor’s mother, Mary, 70, also lives there.
“Tom and Katie will get in the kitchen and make this amazing popcorn with chocolate,” says a pal, Internet mogul Sky Dayton. “Suri is there playing. Kate feeds her a bottle and then Tom feeds her.”
In addition, Cruise and Holmes’s pals, Victoria and David Beckham have bought a multi-million-dollar house only two minutes away. They plan to move in July.
Tom Cruise’s friend Jenna Elfman is shooting down reports that the actor’s five-month marriage to Katie Holmes is unstable.
“Honestly, they’re happy,” Elfman, 35, told PEOPLE at Thursday’s Healthy Child Healthy World benefit in Santa Monica.
“They have a great life and they love each other. For some reason, the media cannot experience that. They must put in things other than the simplicity of it.”
Several recent tabloid stories have alleged that Holmes has been living in a “prison-like” environment and that Cruise has pushed her to adopt his spiritual beliefs.
Elfman, who, like Cruise, is a fellow Scientologist and attended the couple’s lavish wedding in Italy in November, tells PEOPLE the stories could not be further from the truth: “It’s totally irrelevant, because it’s so absolutely not that.”
Elfman added, “It’s hard to give a detailed explanation on something that’s simple. Honestly, do any of you have a great boyfriend or girlfriend? It’s not a big deal, right? You have fun hanging out, and you like talking and sharing your ideas. It’s exciting. That’s their relationship.”
The Cruise family has been spending time in Louisiana lately while Holmes films the comedy Mad Money with Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton. Last week, they threw a first birthday party for daughter Suri at their Los Angeles home.
Elfman is herself seven months pregnant with her first child with husband Bodhi, 37, and tells PEOPLE she’s hoping the give birth naturally. “Bodies have been giving birth for a really long time,” she said. “I want to know what it’s like to go through that process. I’m just going to be as focused and patient as I can be.”

Katie Holmes is already making herself comfortable in Shreveport, La., where she was set to begin shooting a new movie on Monday.
On Friday, she visited the local Target, the Shreveport Times reports. “I met some really great people, and it was nice,” she told the paper. “They did recognize me, and it was a pleasure meeting them. We had nice chats about kids, and it was lovely.”
Holmes, 28, is in Louisiana to film the movie Mad Money with Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton. In the comedy from Thelma & Louise scribe Callie Khouri, the women play coworkers plotting to rob the Federal Reserve Bank.
“I’m pumped,” Holmes told the Times Friday night in a group interview with Khouri, Keaton and costar Ted Danson at the Eldorado Resort Casino. “I loved it from the second I read it. I love interesting female characters, and this is full of them.”
What appealed to Holmes about her character? “She’s funny, she’s smart and just a little bit misunderstood,” she said, glancing mischievously at Keaton. “She’s involved in this crime, but she’s sort of delighted to just be a part of something and have girlfriends for the first time. She’s a type of person who creates a happier environment than she’s actually in. … I like that about her. She’s a free spirit.”
Holmes will soon have an even happier environment of her own: Husband Tom Cruise, 44, recently wrapped filming Lions for Lambs and is due to join Holmes and their daughter Suri, who turns 1 on April 18, in Shreveport.
For Suri, watching Mom at work should be a treat: “It’s another project we’re going to handle together, and that’s part of the fun,” Holmes said recently.

Katie Holmes is reportedly leaning on her best friend, Posh Beckahm for support. Don’t lean too hard Katie or that ho will crumble into a million pices. Tom is apparently controlling Katie’s every move and she’s had it. More like the spell is wearing off.
A source said, “Katie has been crying over the phone. She’s frustrated. Tom is denying her every single thing. Once, Katie and Victoria talked on the phone for four hours.”
There’s no way Posh talks on the phone for 4 hours. She probably just put the phone down, let Katie gab and went shopping instead.
Posh also is sick of Tom for bothering her bony ass about Scientology. A source said, “Victoria is an old-fashioned British woman who believes in God. She finds it quite rude that Tom is bugging her so much. Not too long ago, Tom left 18 messages in one hour to get them to join the church.”
Damn I’m in the mist of watching Dawson’s Creek on TV right now and to see these pics the girl is her mom 100%… She’s a beauty..

Showing off her post-baby figure in a strapless champagne-colored Armani dress, Katie Holmes tells PEOPLE of motherhood: “I love it!”
Holmes left 10-month old Suri at home with her sister-in-law Saturday night to attend a Giorgio Armani Prive fashion show in Beverly Hills to celebrate the man who designed her wedding dress.
Suri, says Holmes, is “doing really, really well. She’s a beautiful little girl, and I feel so honored to be her mom, really.”
Their favorite mother-daughter activity? “A lot of walking around,” she says. “She loves just being outside right now.”
Soon, however, Mrs. Tom Cruise will be heading back to work. “I’m going to start a film in about a month and a half called Mad Money with Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton. I play a young girl who’s part of three women who rob the Federal Reserve.”
She adds with a smile, “It’s a comedy.”
Holmes says returning to work “will be another challenge but I have a wonderful, supportive husband and family, and it’s another project that were going to handle together and that’s part of the fun.”
While husband Tom was busy filming the night of the Oscar-eve fashion show, Holmes rubbed elbows with most of the nominees – including Cruise’s ex, Penelope Cruz, who posed for a photo with Holmes.
